3D SEISMOGEODYNAMIC MODEL OF THE GREATER CAUCASUS WILL BE PREPARED

Head of the Department of Seismology and Seismic Hazard of the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Ph.D. in Earths sciences, assistant professor Gulam Babayev went on a business trip with support from Fulbright Foundation grant to the University of Michigan. The aim was to conduct collaborative study on “Seismic hazard assessment of the Southern slope of the Greater Caucasus using modern methods and approaches” together with Pr. Natan Niyemi (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Michigan).
The result of this study is the preparation of the 3D seismogeodynamic model of the Greater Caucasus. This model will allow determining the speed and localization of active deformations in the study region due to use of the results of modern geodetic and seismic data. Due to geological and thermochronological data it will also allow to determine the formation rate of the Greater Caucasus mountain range and to more precisely assess the seismic hazards, as well as to take a new look at the existing plate tectonics paradigm.
At an early date the obtained results will be discussed by the scientific community and will be sent over to foreign journals.
